*The nation’s higher education system is subject to tense political and socio economic conditions now prevailing for over a decade
*Many institutions of higher education are not operating at full capacity
*Impoverished students live up to 10 to a room leading to insalubrious health conditions
*Heightened fees for tuition and accommodation have led to a high incident of dropouts
*Institutional under funding by the government has resulted in insufficient funds to supply the campuses with teaching and learning material
*One example of the dire situation that faces the sector is that students from the National University of Science and Technology in the city of Bulawayo had to travel 400 miles to the University of Zimbabwe in Harare to witness a laser in action.
*Faculty and staff brain drain is a routine occurrence
